Represented in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate by the Moray Towers stage, Splatoon is Nintendo's most popular new IP from the 10s. The series is best known for its twist on traditional shooter gameplay, where teams of humanoid squids called Inklings compete not to by shooting each other, but by covering as much of the floor with their team's coloured ink as possible. These battles known as Turf Wars obviously can't happen in a non-live ORG. However, we can still use this challenge to see who is the best at colouring in!
In 1976, Appel and Haken proved a theorem that had long been suspected to be true. In short, it states that any map on a 2D plane can have all of its regions coloured so that no two adjacent regions share a colour using only four colours. When you begin the duel, you'll see a map divided into many regions. Your job will be to use only four colours to fill all of its regions, using a program like MS Paint, or similar. In doing so, you will score points, according to the following scheme:
Every section that you fill in blue will net you 10 points.
Every section that you fill in orange will net you 6 points.
Every section that you fill in pink will net you 3 points.
Every section that you fill in green will net you 1 point.
Your goal is to score as many points as possible, within a timeframe of 15 minutes. However, as in the theorem, you can't have two adjacent regions sharing the same colour. You also may not leave any region of the map unfilled. "Adjacent" here means touching side-to-side; it is perfectly legal for regions to touch corner-to-corner.
Side-to-side touching;
Not okay!
Corner-to-corner touching;
This is fine!
We won't be tricky with this; if areas touch side-to-side, it will be clear, and won't require zooming in or counting pixels.
Once you're happy with your submission, upload it to Imgur or similar and post it in your duel thread. You may update this submission as many times as you like within the time limit if you notice a mistake or a way to score more. However, we will only score the most recent one posted. If your final submission has any side-to-side touching sections or any empty regions, you will receive a score of 0. Make sure to work neatly, preferably using the Bucket/Fill tool. If your submission isn't neat or clear enough for us to work out what you mean, you'll also score 0, so be careful!
The highest score(s) will survive The Ring and, if applicable, select a team to return to. The loser will be eliminated from the game. If there is a tie, it will be broken in the favour of the one with the fastest time to submission. In the unlikely event of multiple invalid submissions, we'll break the tie by calculating the number of invalidly coloured and blank squares; lowest number wins, followed by highest score etc if tied. Note that you will be responsible for verifying the correctness of your solution. For the sake of fairness, the hosts will not be able to do this for you, so be sure to check carefully before submitting!
