MUTE CITY
OH YEAH! He’s arrived! Make sure you JAM OUT to the above as you read, nothing like the electrifying beats of the F-ZERO X OST, C’MON!
Race one is MUTE CITY, easiest track in the game! So enjoy watching me PONTIFICATE in a segmented format, and OVERTHINK every minor detail. But don’t expect the captain’s log to ever be close to this long again!
This’ll be a smooth one. 3… 2… 1… GO!!!
ON THE GAME LAYOUT!
Everything looks great. Super impressive! Smash is such a deep well of content, but the format you’ve set up feels really true to what it is at the core. Bit disappointed with some of these rep choices though- do we need another Mario? Another Link? Another Donkey Kong? So many unique Smash reps you don't often get to see in other games, but maybe that just means more room for season 2? Was hoping for some more OTT shenanigans to bounce off of, but I’ll have to bring it out of them. All I know is Samus better be damn good!
Last year I played more ORGs that I had played in the four preceding years. Which was great during lockdown, but I also got reminded at times how involving they can be! So I think this’ll be my last one for a little while. It ticks all the boxes for a game I’d be interested in, so I had to sign up. And I better make it count!
Love the stages, that’s such a great mechanic. I’ve had a look through them all, and actually a good chunk of them seem up my alley. A few definite no hopers- basically anything with numbers. But I don’t feel super pessimistic about my chances should I enter the ring sooner than I’d like, and that’s nice! Hasn’t always been the case. Ironically Big Blue looks like one of the worst for me, gotta get that used asap so I don’t have to end up blocking it myself. Though I’m sure I’ll come up with some excuse.
The cards/sandbags is something I need to get my head around a bit more, get an idea of how it plays out over the first few votes. But an immunity up for grabs every round is gonna be lethal and will surely fuck a lot of plans up, as was the intention I’m sure! Love it.
ON F-ZERO!
So funnily enough, I actually played a bunch of F-Zero X last year. Idk what compelled me, but it was lockdown, and I was checking out a bunch of games on my Wii U (same time I was getting into all the Metroids, welp). But ended up purchasing F-Zero X, and loved it! So I’m officially a fan of the franchise. It’s so SMOOTH! Never played a racing game like it, even on the N64, it runs beautifully. It’s the perfect counterpart to Mario Kart, bring it back! Now is the time! But yeah- I’m officially a fan, so glad to be representing it. The whole 90’s futuristic aesthetic, the music, the vibes. The boost power mechanic add so much strategy, you really have to be careful to not spin out. It's hard as hell too, the races can get pretty intense! Looking forward to getting GX on the GameCube eventually.
Not sure I need to portray Captain Falcon with too much depth, so I’m just having fun with it and seeing where it takes me. Like obvs he has his catchphrases and Smash-isms, but I’ve got the F-Zero knowledge and mythos to flesh him out a bit further, as a genuine fan of the series. So ideally I'll be portraying F-Zero Falcon and not just Smash Falcon, if that makes sense. But he’s really just pure 90s cheese, ultimately harmless, a bit of Johnny Bravo and Zapp Brannigan thrown in there. So far I’m having a great time with him, I have to just trust people will have a soft spot for me and take the cockiness at face value. I’m not letting up though regardless, I’m at that point with ORGS that shtick/fun > gameplay/victory and it’s not close. So they can take me… or send me to THE RING!
ON ARENA!
Statistically speaking, Arena IS my arena! Discounting open-ID games, I’ve won half of the arena games I’ve played (and even with PWT all stars, 2/5 ain’t bad). So I must have a knack for it! Not saying I’m gonna win this of course, but I think I understand how to navigate Arena fairly well. Though understanding and doing are two different things, you kinda have to be ready to throw anyone under the bus with Arena, and your loyalties are really put to the test. Not sure how that kinda style is gonna work with Captain Falcon. Hopefully I’ll manage to win a few duels if need be, but I don’t wanna rely on that. I'll just take it as I do most games- have fun with it and see if I last, and if it starts looking like victory is within reach, time to start getting a bit more ruthless.
Another obstacle I guess is the Aussie meta. Not sure how many Australians are in this of course, probably not even that many if my tribe is anything to go by. But I don’t gel as well in more Aussie-slanted games generally. I’m not into the ORGY meta of keeping in “good” people for no real reason, piling up essays on top of essays to prove our worthiness (though I do think that kinda approach has waned over the years). But I think aussies can kinda take it too far in the other direction sometimes, and people start tightening the noose whenever you show the slightest bit of chutzpah. Or maybe I’m overthinking all this, and I’m just still bitter at Goomba trying to kill Pom Pom from day one of SMP for no goddam reason! But I think a few instances like that, and getting punted early in EVERY open-ID game with the aussie community (outside of Mami), I just feel like I found my niche better with the DA/ORGY crowd. But that was a while ago, there’s probably a lot of fresh faces here, so I’ll try not to have any pre-conceived notions about how I’ll be received.
ON MEN!
Well.. the elephant in the room... my first male rep! I've been ready to break the streak for a while, but it had to be the right game, right rep, right moment. And here we are... my 35th on record game, 25th on record rep, the beginning of my second on record decade of playing. All arbitrary OCD reasons for breaking the streak, but it was arbitrary OCD reasons that kept the streak going in the first place. Ultimately there's just no good reason for me to limit myself, and it was especially apparent with this game, where outside of Samus, none of the female reps were inspiring me too much. I thought it might be a challenge or an adjustment, but it's really not at all lol.
ON THE FREE FOR ALL!
So on to the actual game... the free-for-all, my plan was just to make my entrance on the boards, and reply to anyone who hit me up. I figured I'd have plenty of time on the actual tribes to make my connections, and I'm not gonna go around trying to schmooze anyone that arrived. Then of course I was gonna go to team blue first chance I got, that was a no brainer! I thought a few more people would follow me, not gonna lie! But I guess players like Dark Pit and Kazuya were trying to form connections all over the place, and I was just replying to what I got. I had some good chats with Richter and Squirtle, so glad I stayed with them at least.
Was interesting that people seemed to flock to green right off the bat, I wonder if some kind of alliance was formed, you'd hope not. Just glad I didn't end up on the outside of something like that, knock on wood.
ON TEAM BLUE!
Team Blue seems fine enough! Was worried after that first night, not gonna lie. It seemed like during the night, the six of them had been up chatting and bonding without me. That's not good! And it was a busy day at work so didn't have much of an opportunity to pry myself away, so I felt I had some catching up to do. But, I've managed to spend a good amount of time this weekend staying on top of things and securing my position. I think we've got our first two votes scoped out, after that it might get a bit dicey!
RICHTER - Trust him the most here, he's my boy! I think we get on well, he gets my sense of humour and I think at least for the meantime we can work well together.
SQUIRTLE - Honestly, I felt closer to him when he was just saying Squirtle than I do now. I could just project what I wanted on to him, but now I have to actually decipher what he's saying and it's a bit of a chore not gonna lie. Plus, seems like everyone and their dog had some connection with him during the free for all? Idk, I'm not fully sold on him yet, just a few little red flags popping up. That said- I do like him of course and at least for the meantime we're getting along great and can work together.
FALCO - He's fun, enjoy our banter, and he also seems a bit green as well. Like worrying he offended me with the board banter. How precious! Open to getting closer with him. But if he's too green, and I'm too Captain, it might be hard to bridge that gap.
PYRA & MYTHRA - They're funny, enjoy the shtick, but so far we haven't progressed beyond flirting and character play. I feel like of everyone, that chunk of time I lost hurt the progression of our relationship the most. Get the feeling they're much closer to others already, so I gotta start winning them over quickly if I can. Don't wanna end up in a situation where the rest are picking between the two of us (three of us?) as we gun for each other.
IKE - He's a bit of a stick in the mud. Appreciate the commitment to character, but it's hard to get something going with him. The two fire emblem boys seem to be bottom of the barrel, so barring some immunity bids I think they're likely to be the first ones to go.
MARTH - He was our first boot, but one message and I'm already keen to swap him out for Ike. That social game! Well really he just seems more keen to banter with me, and that's gonna be more fun.
YOSHI - Not blue, but I can talk to him, so I'll talk about him too. But lol what a hilarious presence. Such an absurd style of game play (if it's even real and not some ploy) and the way he's so casually sharing around gossip to each of the tribes, it's pretty lulzy. I don't think anyone will end up trusting him but it's gonna be funny to see how his journey pans out in this.
I feel somewhat comfortable right now, but with such small teams, and so much room for sandbags to shake things up, I'm not expecting to feel safe for long. And with 5/7 of us all pretty active and well-ingrained, things are gonna heat up real quick.
But THE CAPTAIN is ready for anything! C'MON!
