Here's a fresh take from a recent, key, (red) eye-witness!

Yoshi made himself little more than a pawn this entire game and by that didn't actually play the same game any of us did. He was inconsequential to strategy talks, benign and ineffective off of his own merits to the very end and I wouldn't give him a vote for victory if it was a final 1.

Wario is a thoroughly unpleasant entity and I think anyone thrust into his orbit found that out the moment they didn't 'step 'n fetch' on his command. Utterly dependent on Yoshi from the mid-point as well, so hardly a strategic force once he found the only player who willingly bound himself to a stupid egg rule and thus could be controlled to his liking.

Captain Falcon is by far the only remaining player who I can say I enjoyed speaking and playing with. Definitely goofy at times, but he won when it counted, made moves in his group and independently at a key moment (which I got burned by and benefitted from respectively), and somehow has gotten himself into the finale when I was sure he'd be battling for his life right now. Also, if he wins, my badge is right there claiming partial credit, so >:)

Falco was a better guy than I gave him initial credit for, given he seemed to go nuts with the BS tour after the merge while he was immune. By his own admission on that front too. Kept himself out of the crosshairs mostly, stayed out of the central conflicts so others could take the bullets and from what he said, he lined up a lot of the attack bags to give himself the best shot at these last challenges by having his preferred choice there too, so strategising within his lane effectively. Bit dry for my tastes conversationally, but some people don't go for that stuff and fair play to him.

Yoshi always demonstrated an astute understanding of strategy when I spoke with him. I will be interested to hear his argument and determine whether or not he can be accredited any agency in the game outside of the way he chose to cast his votes. Given the way the merge mostly maintained a stagnant side war, individual votes meant very little for most of the rounds, so I do not see it as as much of a mark against him as I might do otherwise. I can't speak for the last few rounds, of course, which did seem to be a little more layered than the ones previously. I'm not saying Yoshi is a top contender here, by any means other than arenawhoring, but I am not entirely ruling him out either.

Wario occasionally came up with clever and bold tactics that I admire him for but he was completely devoid of any semblance of tact and seemed utterly oblivious to the underlying social nature of the game. I respect that he deviated from the initial green alliance to try and bolster his position in his new alliance with the yellow people but he needed to do something else after that. Instead he just further empowered them and has now allowed the Captain to enter the finals almost completely unchallenged. He started off with a bang, or a hundred, and has gone out with a whimper, regardless of the results of the final duel.

I had a similar experience with Falco as Kazuya. He drove me crazy during the swap and early merge. I found him to be exceedingly obtuse for little to no reason and I very rarely found myself able to agree or feel comfortable with him. He did grow on me a lot during the merge and I came to like and trust him more than I ever expected when I left. He seems to recognise his own value, is confident in that and knew how to play to his strengths. Unfortunately that essentially boils down to "was good at challenges" which means very little to me in the grand scheme of things. I may be tempted to vote for him just based on the whacky friendship that we did eventually form over time but ultimately I do not think that it will be enough.

The main problem any of those three will face is that they will be up against Captain Falcon. A fate which they have willingly chosen. The fact that he did not get voted into the ring tonight is absurd. How any of them think they stand a chance against him is beyond me. The Captain was highly active at all times, very social with everybody, direct and upfront when he could be, disarming and deceptive when he needed to be... He is the whole package, really. I called him out on being one of the strongest players and biggest threats to win when we encountered each other at the merge and that he managed to obscure that seemingly obvious fact to the other players is just further merit to his cause. He would need to absolutely tank his final performance, and somebody else would have to be perform spectacularly, for me to seriously consider voting elsewhere.

Damn, you're all posting essays. I'm... not going to do that. But I guess I'll talk a little bit about my thoughts.

Yoshi... eh. I think theoretically there's a way I find his shtick a lot more bearable, but from my point of view it was just... completely unworkable. Part of it is probably my fault, I was pretty blunt when I asked him how I was supposed to work with him if I could never influence his vote. He just said 'there were other ways he could be of use' and... that was it. And he was really annoying trying to leak and stir trouble at the very beginning of the game, and at merge, just nothing at all other than vague pleasantries. I probably came across as too closed-minded for him to bother trying to work with me, but it didn't feel like he gave a shit about even trying to speak to me at any point, so why should I give a shit about voting for him to win?

Wario, Wario, Wario. What a man. What an overplaying, apparently-unpleasant, bizarre man. I actually was never on the bad side of Wario, I guess because he never expected much of me. But... nah. His strategy was always super fucking obvious, and not really in a fun, rootable way. Just a 'you REALLY think that's fooling us' kinda way. I guess the joke's on us for letting him get this far, but... I'm pretty sure his avoidance of these late-game duels was NOT due to his insane social game, lmfao.

Falcon's aight. Never had shit with him, never got on the same page as him, but he gets mild brownie points with me for being willing to banter even while we weren't working together. I appreciated that. Could see myself voting for him with a good FTC, and if Falco loses this duel, he almost 100% gets my vote.

Falco's the frontrunner for me personally. Always a straight shooter, pretty ballsy dude, always happy to say what he meant and tell people he was ready to go against them, and I just find that really fun and super respectable. My vote's his to lose if he's able to pick up this final duel win.

Thanks for the insight, Squirtle - especially about Yoshi. I can confirm he was a very active and involved player on the red team, but that may not account for much given the overall state of that tribe I suspected he was a keener player than he was given credit for just based on the way that he spoke about the game but it was hard to know for sure when our interests rarely aligned from the merge onwards. I do not think he should be completely disregarded here, just for the egg gimmick alone, at the very least.

Captain Falcon will certainly need to explain his role in the last few rounds. It is entirely possible I am giving him too much credit and he has just been making shit up as he went along. On the surface he appears to have played a very smooth and clever game, well liked by everyone, always in the thick of things while avoiding drawing too much attention to himself, and only entering the ring once near the very end of the competition. How much of this was intentional on his part does remain to be seen, although I tend to think that it was.
